Frequently asked questions

Why do UK airports charge for drop-off? +
UK airports introduced forecourt drop-off charges between 2018 and 2023 to reduce congestion at terminal entrances and to fund 'sustainable transport' improvements (rail, bus, EV chargers). Heathrow adopted it in 2022. London City was the last major holdout — it introduced a paid terminal drop-off in January 2026, meaning every major UK airport now charges in some form.
Why do airports charge a drop-off fee at all? +
Officially the airports cite congestion reduction and funding sustainable transport. The unofficial answer most travellers give: it's a high-margin revenue stream from drivers who can't easily switch behaviour. Charges have steadily risen since introduction (Gatwick: £2 → £6 → £10 in five years). Each airport sets its own rate independently.
Do all UK airports charge for drop-off? +
Yes, every major UK airport now charges. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, Manchester and London City all have a forecourt drop-off charge. London City was the last to introduce one (January 2026). Smaller regional airports like Southampton, Exeter, Bournemouth and Cardiff currently have no forecourt drop-off charge — but check before travelling, as the trend has been universal adoption.
Which UK airport has the cheapest drop-off charge? +
Manchester Airport is currently the cheapest of the major airports at £5, though with the shortest 5-minute window. Birmingham is next at £6 with a generous 15-minute window. Heathrow, Stansted and Luton are all £7. London City is £8 for 5 minutes (then £1 per minute) — the highest per-minute rate. Gatwick is the most expensive flat fee at £10 (raised in January 2026).
Can I avoid the drop-off charge? +
Yes, at every major UK airport. Each one operates a free 'long-stay' or 'mid-stay' car park with a free shuttle bus to the terminal. The free option typically takes 10-15 minutes longer than the forecourt drop-off but costs nothing. We've listed each airport's free alternative above.
Are drop-off charges increasing? +
Yes — significantly in 2026. Gatwick's charge nearly doubled, rising from £6 to £10 in January 2026. Heathrow rose from £6 to £7 in late 2025. Luton went from £6 to £7 in 2026. London City introduced its first-ever charge — £8 for 5 minutes plus £1 per minute thereafter — in January 2026. Birmingham (£6) and Manchester (£5) have held steady. We update this page quarterly to reflect the current charge.
What happens if I overstay the time limit? +
Each airport handles this differently — and the policies have tightened in 2026. Stansted historically has the steepest overage penalty. Heathrow now charges a full £7 again if you stay longer than the 10-minute window. ANPR cameras at every forecourt log entry/exit times automatically; you can't avoid detection by leaving via a different lane.
Are Blue Badge holders exempt? +
Most major UK airports exempt Blue Badge holders from the drop-off charge — but the vehicle must be registered in advance via the airport's exemption portal. Don't assume the camera system will recognise the badge automatically.
Can I dispute a charge? +
Yes. Each airport has a dispute process — usually you'll need photo evidence of the time-stamped exit. You can dispute via the airport's official drop-off page within 30 days of the charge appearing.
Is pick-up the same as drop-off? +
Usually no — pick-up is more expensive and has shorter time limits because passengers wait for arriving travellers. This guide covers drop-off only. Check each airport's official page for pick-up charges.
